i dont want to approach you at a bar. i dont want to buy you a drink. i dont want to say something witty to get your attention. i dont want to start it off by talking about where we went to college and what we studied and what we do. i dont want to know your linkedin profile. i dont want to have a…
yep.
Basically, I’m going to lay it out like this: if you don’t support her or if you spew a bunch of transphobic nonsense, I don’t want to know you.
Punk builds itself up as being accepting and inclusive, but I still see people throwing around the word “faggot” and making fun of bands who “look like chicks” and all of that. People came out of the woodwork to defend Al Barr when he said “don’t be a faggot” in a promo video (he later apologized in a way that seemed sincere, but the fanboys who were pro-him-using-a-slur never did).
For all the preaching about unity and respect, there’s still a machismo to the culture. But any slurs against gays, women, and trans* people are antithesis to what’s supposed to be at punk’s heart. It should be a scene where you can be whoever you are and everyone can come together over a style of music.
So, like I said, if you don’t support Tom Gabel’s transition to Laura Jane Grace, stay the hell away from me.
You know, I don’t even listen to this band, but I support this girl 100%. It’s great to have more celebrities coming out as transgender. Slowly but surely, things will hopefully change for the better, my friends.
One of my favorite bands of all time. I’m really happy for her. Glad that she no longer has to keep it a secret.
